My connection to Bicol began with an introduction to its breathtaking landscapes and the remarkable artisans who call it home, thanks to my friend Maria, a proud native of the region. (Check out her conscious social media agency, Beige Social!)Inspired by this experience, I set out to create the seagrass and abaca tote bags that would later become our Bicolana and Fiesta collections. I was determined to partner exclusively with local manufacturers who specialize in the traditional craftsmanship that defines the Philippines. Each of these bags is crafted from natural materials like seagrass fibers, abaca, and ticog leaves, meticulously handcrafted by Filipino artisans from Bicol. These bags embody a fusion of heritage, culture, and a deeply personal vision.
The names of these bags are steeped in the rich traditions and vibrant culture of their origins:
Bicolana: A tribute to the women of Bicol, capturing their strength, grace, and deep connection to their roots.
Fiesta: Inspired by the region's lively festivals, such as the Tinagba Festival in Iriga City (February) and the Ibalong Festival in Legazpi (August), these bags celebrate the spirit of joy and community that defines Bicol's cultural heritage.
